Emma Chamberlain
Forever my celebrity obsession
Do you have a celebrity you have watched grow from the beginning of their career, support them from afar, and appreciate their successes? I discovered Emma Chamberlain soon after her YouTube channel started gaining attention in 2017. Her unique humor and video editing made her charming and I couldn’t stop watching. Her videos became my ‘comfort show’. It’s easy to see her personality through the videos and she is entertainingly relatable and you can tell that she is being her true authentic self. She used to do videos of drive-thru taste tests, thrifting, and more. Her signature look was a crop top and jeans with her ‘poopy’ jacket and a scrunchie in her hair, typically in a ponytail. That ‘poopy’ jacket became one of the most popular pieces around 2018-2021. I guarantee you know exactly the brown fleece jacket I’m talking about. Emma is a self-made woman who had no idea how much she would grow in her career after launching her YouTube channel, which currently has 12 million subscribers. She has a big personality and an even bigger imagination/mind.
In the most recent years of her career, she has had some partnerships with notable brands including Cartier, Levis, Lancome, Adidas, and Louis Vuitton. I still remember how proud and impressed I felt when I saw her high fashion debut at Louis Vuitton’s show at Paris Fashion Week in 2019. It’s kind of a full circle moment because she started her channel intending her videos to be about fashion. In July 2017, she uploaded a video making her own Gucci shirt and now she’s being invited to their shows. She has also been on the front page of several well-known magazines including Rolling Stones, Cosmopolitan, Vogue Australia, Allure, Harper's Bazaar, and more. There were also features about Emma in magazines such as Forbes and Vogue. She has also interviewed guests at the Met Gala for Vogue’s YouTube channel every year since 2021. In 2022, she and Jack Harlow were a meme for a while because of a clip from one of those interviews.
Like I said before, she is a businesswoman. She has built her brand, Chamberlain Coffee, since 2020. The graphics on the products make it more intriguing and fun! There is a variety of different kinds of coffees and the names fit the roast or flavor well. When I began writing this piece, I happened to be in Whole Foods when I spotted two of her coffees in cans. I got to taste the vanilla and mocha lattes and to be quite honest, they weren’t my favorite. Since the milk is plant-based (almond and coconut), shake it very well before opening or it will be a little chunky. Both didn’t taste very much like the flavors they’re supposed to be, but I also think I hold high expectations for canned coffees. She also has her podcast, Anything Goes, which I will admit I don’t listen to, but I like the merch for it. Her limited clothing line High Key was her style at the time but didn’t last very long. Either way, you can tell how motivated she is in her professional life.
On to her personal life … Something she has gotten really good at is keeping what she wants private, private. She has always kept her dating life private, though it hasn’t been super tough to figure things out. Her relationship with the singer, Role Model, ended recently after being together for over three years. Though their relationship was kept very private, they gave their fans a little something, sometimes including their interview together for GQ which was uploaded on YouTube on Valentine’s Day in 2023. There has been a lot of speculation on her relationships, but Role Model is the only one who has been confirmed. There were some assumptions about her dating life based on evidence. People believed that she was in a relationship with Ethan Dolan for a bit as well as Aaron Hull, who gained popularity on TikTok in 2019. Her relationship with Dolan was never confirmed, but Hull verified that they were together for a few months. I think she likes to keep her personal life private because she has had relationships in the past, where other people were using her to gain popularity on their channels or profiles. Emma had admitted to feeling used by peers, which shouldn't be the case. She is a wonderful person who has a big personality and it’s disappointing that people would take advantage of that for personal gain.
I would say that she was the center of a few friend groups, but to me, there are two main ones. The ‘Sister Squad’ and the ‘Girdies’. The ‘Sister Squad’ definitely gained the most amount of popularity due to the group consisting of Emma, the Dolan twins, and James Charles. They were all at the peak of their Youtube careers when this group came together which led fans to theorize that the squad formation was a marketing move. I wouldn't be surprised if that’s true, but their chemistry was undeniable. I think they were genuine friends and spent as much time together as they admitted but I think there was some professional motivation to get together as well. They made a bunch of videos together between all of their channels that I still watch for comfort to this day. Now the ‘girdies’. This group was Emma, Hannah Meloche, and Ellie Thuman. Hannah and Ellie were best friends before Emma came into the picture, but they met through the trips that Dote used to put together (a story for another time). These three were an unstoppable trio. They were pretty, funny, quirky, and everything every girl wanted to be at the time. They were close with photographer Bryant and had many photoshoots all together. I believe they fell out because they grew out of each other. Emma was more based around comedy and silly little vlogs, whereas Hannah and Ellie were/are more focused on more ‘aesthetic’ vlogs. I can’t imagine how let down Emma has felt by people who she can tell are using her for personal gain. But I think she has a good head on her shoulders and can recognize an honest friend.
I love Emma Chamberlain. I think she is an amazing person who deserves the world. She has always been open about her mental health, whether it’s depression or anxiety, and I appreciate her transparency. Being watched by the public eye is a difficulty I could never imagine myself facing. She handles it with grace and knows how to handle herself. I can’t wait to see what she does in the future and I’m confident it will be great!

Nine Perfect Strangers
A different kind of spa
To set the scene, imagine Melissa McCarthy in a new BMW driving on a back road, receiving a call that sends her over the edge. She pulls her car over to the side of the road, gets out, and starts screaming ‘Dead to the f*cking world!’ Bobby Cannavale’s character, Tony, pulls up and asks if she’s ok, and thus begins their bitter relationship.
Tranqiulum is a resort that is supposed to bring calmness and heal their ‘patients’. Do they have any type of medical license? Of course not. Soon into the show, you learn that everyone there was selected out of thousands of applicants because they were ‘the most damaged’ which makes you curious as to why they are all there. Some of them are very open about their problems, but others are more private, but you eventually discover their trauma whether it’s in their one-on-one session with Masha or in their group activities.
Here are the nine guests and their main caretaker:
Masha, played by Nicole Kidman, is a wellness guru whose life was working in the corporate world until she was shot. She was legally dead then when she came back to life, she wanted to transform her life into something more peaceful. Thus Tranquilum was born. She glows when she walks into the room and has an enchanting feeling to her.
Francis, performed by Melissa McCarthy, is a struggling writer who needs a break from reality. She was vulnerable to someone in her past that hurt her in the end and she is working on processing what happened.
Carmel, executed by Regina Hall, seems like a delicate woman who is a mother of four and had issues with her husband. She says she is there for ‘esteem building, weight loss, and mind and body transformation’. There is also a twist in her and Masha’s relationship during their one-on-one session. Throughout the show, you see more and more of her true colors, which can be quite frightening.
Marconi family
Napoleon is a father who tries to keep things as lighthearted as possible. Wants what’s best for his family.
Heather is the mother and is just a little off. You can tell her mind is somewhere else. To be honest, I don't know how to describe her other than a little bitter.
Zoe, the daughter, is sweet and celebrates her 21st birthday while at Tranquilum. She wants her family to be themselves again but is also feeling the same pain they do.
Tony is kind of a tough guy who has a difficult past. He relieves his physical and mental pain in a way that Masha makes sure she can control when he is at Tranquilum. Some of the others recognize him but can’t place him at first. Eventually, they do and it opens a can of worms which is his past.
Jessica and Ben are a young couple who are having marital problems. It’s easy to tell their spark is gone and she is the one wanting to put in the effort to save their marriage. It’s interesting to see how their relationship further develops throughout the show.
Lars is a guy who you can’t figure out at first. He’s a little shady and has a bit of an attitude with everyone, but a unique soft spot for Zoe, not in a creepy way. He wants to figure out what Tranquilum is really about because there has to be something going on beyond the surface.
Mind, body, and soul. That’s what the characters focus on at Tranquilum. Their minds open up individually and together which brings them together. They trust their bodies with Masha’s staff because they are provided with all the food. They always start their mornings with a smoothie and later on, you discover what is up with all the smoothies and why the guests are so infatuated with them. They can release what they need from their soul during the group exercises. They are vulnerable during these intense activities and grow closer together from strangers to close friends with unique relationships. Later in the show, you learn Masha’s intentions and everything begins to add up and fall into place in a way that you don’t want to miss. I would recommend this show if you love shows like White Lotus!

An overview of the documentary that tells the dark backstory of the popular brand
Brandy Hellville
Part 1
Simplistic, small, and exclusive. Brandy Melville began taking over girls' wardrobes in the 2010s and still has young girls in a chokehold. The brand is known for having "one size" clothes, that only fit the thinnest girls, and having basic designs. Brandy was all over Tumblr in the 2010s, made girls feel superior to those who didn’t wear it, and created a community and lifestyle that prided itself on its different kind of exclusivity. HBO recently released a documentary covering the dark side of the famous brand, Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion. In the introduction, someone says there is anti-semitism, sexism, and racism coursing through the veins of the people who run the company. The brand falls under the category of fast fashion to an insane extent and the documentary thoroughly explores the different negative effects of fast fashion. Before we dive deep into the controversial brand, I would like to give you a backstory.
The brand is known for having a beachy, soft, feminine look. It was all over Tumblr and Pinterest as outfit inspiration. The girls were the ‘tiny, ideal size’ and influenced teen and pre-teen girls who wanted to be a part of the ‘exclusive’ community which was purposefully part of the business plan. Buying a plain gray t-shirt from Brandy allowed them to join the ‘Brandy Melville lifestyle’. ‘Fashion is identity, especially for teenage girls’, and Brandy captured that the most out of any brand. They hired a lot of ‘it-girl’ influencers who posted on YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. A lot of the photographers were teenagers taking photos of teenagers which were uploaded on several different platforms. Through the YouTube videos, these girls were watching how the photoshoots work which also worked well as a promotion for the brand. Youtubers who didn’t work with the brand would still talk about it whether it was in a haul video or something else. In the documentary, there is a clip of Hannah Meloche from one of her videos saying she hopes she gets noticed by Brandy because she was wearing one of their tops. Brandy Melville doesn't have promotions besides social media. One of the women in the documentary says that it’s impossible to talk about Brandy without talking about social media. Their Instagram is full of skinny girls wearing their simple pieces but nothing more than that. A lot of these pictures were taken behind one of their stores against the iconic white brick wall. Brandy became a figure online. TikTok has allowed young girls to create their own real content for the first time without any restrictions and can reach an international audience. They are posting outfits of the day, get ready with me, and other kinds of fashion and beauty-related videos and a lot of their outfits include something by Brandy Melville. This has helped the brand be recognized and successful internationally.
Though there has been a lot of inclusivity in the fashion industry, but Brandy has not conformed to that idea. While the business hires people of color as models and store employees, there is heavy discrimination in the workplace. Some former employees spoke about their experiences working at Brandy. A couple of girls talked about how they recognized racism in the workplace. The white, popular girls were in the front of the store, interacting with customers. The girls of color were sometimes behind the register but were mainly in the back dealing with inventory. No one felt like they could speak up about it to the managers. Later in the film, you learn about several legal cases Brandy Melville is involved in and they didn’t deny firing people because of their race. Kate Taylor, a writer for Insider, was featured throughout the documentary. She wrote a piece around the time the scandal started the strike Brandy titled ‘Brandy Melville’s CEO doesn’t want Black people to wear the brand’s clothing, according to ex-store owner.’ More ex-employees were speaking out after the article was published. Not only does the brand discriminate against people of color, but also people of different sizes. Like I said earlier, Brandy Melville only has ‘one size’ clothes which implied ‘one size fits all’ which then changed to ‘one size fits most.’ Still not necessarily true. Their clothes fit most of their customers. Some of the girls who spoke out in the documentary were open about their eating disorders while working there and the pressure they felt to be as skinny as possible because they were the faces of the Brandy Melville storefronts. There were videos online of girls trying to lose weight to fit into Brandy Melville, and they would include the name in the title. Gen Z wouldn’t put up with a brand like this, but we are the target audience, so what’s the deal?
Now we get to the weird stuff… but first, you may be wondering where the name came from. It was based on a fictional story with two characters named Brandy and Melville. Since the name doesn’t come from a real person, who started Brandy Melville? Kate Taylor had a difficult time finding information on the founder, CEO, or even a mission statement. It turns out each store is owned by a different shell company which makes it harder to find who runs the actual brand. Brandy Melville is a trademark owned by a larger Swiss company. Eventually, Taylor discovered Stephan Marsan, the owner. He is Italian and doesn’t speak any English. One of the anonymous store owners, played by an actor in the documentary, said ‘the vibe was good’ with Stephan. Jessy is his right-hand man. He runs the Brandy Melville Instagram which, like I said before, is full of skinny girls in mostly tight clothes. Creepy that’s it’s run by a bald man with braces. No one has ever been sure of what Jessy’s official title is, but it turns out no one in the company seems to have one. It seems way too casual of a company for how successful it is. There were some clips from the inside of the headquarters and it was so unorganized. It’s definitely not a conventional brand. Which leads to another disaster in the brand. Fast fashion plays into what I wrote about before in my piece ‘Our Need For Speed’, but we’ll get into that more in part 2. Brandy Melville wasn’t popular in Italy when they were making t-shirts that said things like ‘stressed / depressed / but well dressed’. Teen girls weren’t very interested so they switched to a surfer, natural, chill vibe and started gaining attention from their target audience. Over time it has grown tremendously and is ‘an incredibly successful business. Abercrombie looked into buying brandy and their bankers were shocked by how successful the business was financially.’ Now, it has grown into the empire it is today.
This is only half of what the movie covered! There’s more to come in the future and it just gets more shocking. Films like this tell us the real stories of what’s happening behind closed doors in the world of people with power and it is fascinating.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
A deeper twist to a classic spy movie
One of the most beautiful and iconic couples in Hollywood met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. What made them so intriguing? Between two stunning actors, romance, and action plus their characters being enemies. This story has such a good plot and the new show that came out inspired by the movie is spectacular. Maya Erskine and Donald Glover execute their characters in a raw and complex fashion that is incredibly impressive. I’ll admit, I’m quite excited to write about this show, so let’s get started.
John and Jane Smith are the new couple on the block and aren’t your typical neighbors. They are lowkey and keep to themselves, like they’re under the radar (they are). In the beginning, they are complete strangers assigned together, and they happen to be legally married. Throughout the show, you watch their relationship develop romantically and professionally. Since they are spies, they go on missions together and are told what to do by Hihi, their boss who they only communicate with by IM. They are only told what to do, never why. It’s interesting to observe their relationship from the outside and see how they work together as partners through different situations.
On to the acting. Ersine and Glover presented me with some of the best performances I’ve ever seen. It felt so real and emotional. I only recognize both actors from roles that weren’t anywhere close to being as serious as this show is. They’re typically viewed as comedians, but I think this show really proves how well they take on a major role. They collaborated to create such a good show in honor of the original movie, and did so beautifully.
If you love action and romance, this is THE show for you. I’ve caught myself daydreaming about the show thinking about how good this show is.
Ugly Betty
My new comfort show
Fashion is an industry that I, myself, am somewhat scared to enter. The beauty standards, adventurous styles expanding, harsh opinions on everything and trends coming and going every season. It’s not easy being the assistant to the Editor in Chief of Mode magazine, which is a high fashion magazine right up there with Vogue, Vanity Fair, etc. Imagine it’s the mid-2000s, you’re Betty Suarez, a 22-year-old Queens born Latina who lives at home with her father, sister and nephew. Their family works together to take care of each other through thick and thin. But the moral of the whole story is, looks don’t define you.
Betty walks into her first day at Mode flashing her braces with her big smile, bangs covering her forehead and a red poncho draped over her with ‘Guadalajara’ in large yellow letters. She was judged for her looks and was ultimately hired because the head of Meade Publications knew his son, Daniel Meade, who is the Editor-In-Chief of Mode wouldn’t be attracted to her. After finding this out, she was disappointed in the reasoning especially because she believed that they recognized her potential and fantastic work ethic. But Daniel and Betty develop a beautiful friendship throughout the series which makes up for the rocky start.
But what makes this show so special? Betty is immediately judged for her looks and is treated differently by everyone in the beginning of her career. She was made fun of and undermined by her co-workers because she looked and dressed differently than what the magazine portrayed. Personally, I didn't think her style was necessarily bad but it was unique. But they soon recognize how hard working, intelligent, caring and overall amazing she is. But she is still given a hard time throughout the series because she doesn’t change herself in order to conform to their standards. This show teaches the viewers to never judge a book by its cover because underneath there’s more than what meets the eye. It also teaches us to stay level headed when difficult situations arise. The same way Betty stays calm in tough times between a dramatic work environment and keeping her family's best interest in mind, on top of a rollercoaster of a personal life. This show is so heartwarming because throughout the show you are rooting for Betty and know she’s going to succeed in the end whether it’s in her professional or personal life because she is so collected
I binged this show hardcore and watched some great character development with almost all of the characters throughout the show. I really think a lot of people would enjoy this show because the drama, fashion and relationships keep you intrigued. It features America Ferrera as Betty and she is, as always, fabulous. 9.4/10
Ali Wong and Steven Yeun
There are a ton of celebrity duos who are well known together such as Amy Pohler and Tina Fey, Key and Peele, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson. But, my favorite celebrity duo happens to be Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. Both are well known comedians but I’m not sure how known some of their projects are. The reason I love this duo so much is because they star in my comfort show Tuca and Bertie along with Tiffany Haddish. This show is a whimsical and quirky animation that covers a range of topics from anxiety/depression, sobriety, dating, sexual assault and feeling lost personally and professionally. While these can be heavy or personal topics, the tone of the show is quite lighthearted and fun!
The reason I’m writing about Wong and Yeun is because I also recently just finished their newer drama together Beef. Before watching this show, I didn’t know anything about it, only that it had great reviews. I didn’t even know they were playing the two main characters until their first interaction, the road rage scene. This scene introduces the whole show and is the cause of the relationship between these two psychos.
I find Wong and Yeun impressive not only for how successful they are in general, but more specifically for their range between these two shows. In Tuca and Bertie, Wong plays Bertie who is a sweet bird who is a baker and Yeun plays Speckle, Berties architect boyfriend. In the first episode, they move in together so you see their relationship grow even more. Whereas in Beef, after the road rage scene, Wong and Yeun’s characters dedicate time and effort into getting back at each other in ways you wouldn’t be able to come up with on your own. They go through some crazy times, but throughout the show you see how they grow because of/ with each other. Though Tuca and Bertie is an animation and Beef is live action, you can just tell by the difference in their voices that they fully immerse themselves into their roles which make it that much more impressive when their roles are on completely different spectrums.
I wanted to write about this because I believe these two fantastic actors deserve recognition for their impressive work together.
